Yes, a cell signal booster typically improves data speeds for phones and hotspots when your slow speed is caused by insufficient signal strength (low RSRP).
Here’s how the tradeoff: Your NETGEAR Nighthawk uses MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output)—the tower and your phone send parallel data streams over spatially separated antennas, and the receiver reconstructs them into a single higher-throughput link. The Nighthawk has a 4×4 MIMO internal antenna and it can connect an external 2×2 MIMO antenna. Both of these increase the throughput of the data.
Cell signal boosters, on the other hand, rebroadcast SISO (single-input, single-output) inside the space. Once the booster amplifies the incoming signal and rebroadcasts it from one inside antenna, the spatial multiplexing MIMO uses for higher throughput is lost. Your hotspot still sees strong signal, but it can only run a single stream instead of the parallel streams the tower is offering.
Because of that, your first option should be to look into an external 2×2 MIMO antenna for your Nighthawk. In a home or office, you’d use something like the Poynting XPOL series antenna. In a vehicle, you’d use a Poynting PUCK-2 or MIMO-3. On a boat or ship, the Poynting OMNI-402 is what you’d want.
If an external MIMO antenna doesn’t improve your Nighthawk’s data speeds, then a cell signal booster would be the next option to try.
